Habitat

Cluster Flies are also known as 'Attic Flies' occupying loft space and wall cavities. If in doubt as to whether you have cluster flies, their numbers give them away, they usually are in their hundreds and thousands and tend to return to the same location annually! Adults live harmlessly outdoors in the summer months but then target rural semi rural buildings usually last two weeks of October or first two weeks of November and in vast numbers.
Cluster flies tend not to cause problems with properties in more urban locations.

Importance

During summer and early autumn they are of no consequence. As the season cools they seek shelter in and around buildings. As the temperature drops, cluster flies search for more long term protection, targeting south and east facing parts of buildings and consequently forming clusters in loft spaces. Once inside, the shear numbers entering lower living space can be extremely irritating for home owners. Many home owners will have a go at trying to deal with the problem by using fly sprays on upper and lower levels and experience and endless hoovering to try remove the problem. A cluster fly problem requires professional solution targeting the very root of the problem.
