Habitat
The burrows of the Brown Rat externally are quite recognisable. They can be found on sloping grounds of banks and rivers or beneath some form of cover such as drains, tree roots or pavements. The Brown Rat can also be found inside in loft spaces and cavity walls, normally indicated by droppings and tunnels through insulation. They require free access to water and feed on a wide range of food sources. Entry to a building can be via an opened toilet, sewage or drainage pipes and even doorways.
Importance
The Brown Rat, has been known to carry disease organisms such as Weil's disease or Leptospirosis. It is essential that any contact with Rats such as worktops, cupboards, floors etc to be cleaned thoroughly with disinfectant and all droppings cleared.
Control
Sourcing where the rodent's entry points are, is essential. The use of tracking dusts can be used for this. Proofing of all entry points are vital e.g. holes in cavity walls and drain covers etc. Baiting or trapping can also take place with the use of single or multi catch traps or snapper traps. Baiting can be undertaken if the rodents are found to be outside with the use of bait boxes. Decisions can be made after thorough surveys on the best action to take.
